Is your creative energy actually holding you back?

Having worked in creative industries for the past 6 years and seen first hand the effects of comparison, high expectations and lack of support for people with a creative skillset that can’t always be measured, I definitely feel there is a strong connection between creative minds and mental health issues. Personally, I constantly had high power creative energy flowing through my veins, but always felt like the pressure of this actually left me unable to take action on anything. Let’s just say procrastination was my middle name! I’ve suffered from anxiety, OCD with depression added to the mix and felt weighed down by everything going in my mind, unable to take control. I felt inspired but unmotivated, energised but at the same time absolutely drained… I tried all the popular goal setting methods but everything made me feel worse because I just didn’t have the motivation to actually get going! The feeling of wanting to do so much but not achieving anything would only add to my low self esteem, anxiety and hopelessness for the future.

I started to think about the way we are taught to set goals and began to realise why this might not work for everyone (especially creative people, people who suffer with their mental health or from a chronic illness). Instead of feeling defeated by my own mind I wanted to be in control. I realised there must be a way I can learn to be productive, on my own terms - right?!

I knew how beneficial goal setting could be for mental wellness so I began to look at the traditional goal setting methods with the intention of creating something more holistic that targets all aspects of wellbeing. Enter the G.E.N.T.L.E method! Which really does live up to it’s name. It’s a gentle way to approach mental - and physical wellness.

I created this method and teamed it with a workbook to give an insight into why goal setting is such an important step and a powerful tool for general wellbeing. It includes exercises to put your thoughts into action because as much as it's essential to talk, the real results come when we start to take positive action in changing our mindsets and daily routines.
